Islam Unveiled in Dublin

True-life stories of Muslim women were re-edited in "Beyond the Veil" in Dublin this semester.

New York University Tisch School of the Arts student Catherine Clark collaborated with Dublin Institute of Technology student Nadia Shah this semester to create the community-based arts project aimed at correcting misconceptions of Muslim women.

Catherine and Nadia worked with a small group of Muslim women to produce The Revealer, a newspaper with articles offering an alternative representation of these women.

The exhibit was hosted at the Lab in Dublin during the last week in April.

Increased Funding for Study Abroad Scholarships

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced in her New York University commencement address on May 13 that funding for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program will increase by more than 40 percent.

"You know, study abroad is like spring training for this century. It helps you develop the fundamentals, the teamwork, and the determination to succeed. And we want more American students to have that opportunity," Secretary Clinton said last week.

The Gilman Scholarships provide funding for undergraduate students seeking to study abroad for a semester or a full year. Additional funding is offered to students who wish to study in 'non-traditional' study abroad places. Read more about this scholarship on the Web site for the U.S. Department of State.

Secretary Clinton received an honorary degree at the 177th NYU Commencement held at Yankee Stadium. Watch Secretary Clinton's video for her full commencement address.

New York University Tisch School of the Arts offers semester-long fall and spring study abroad programs for all undergraduate NYU and visiting students. Short-term summer undergraduate and graduate programs are also available.

Why Study Art?

It's a question we all struggle with, particularly in these difficult economic times. Whatever value the arts have in our society is certainly not easily measured, like, for instance, the gross domestic product. But the arts provide something far more intangible, yet equally valuable.

This viewpoint got a strong endorsement, as the New York Times reports today, from Michelle Obama. In New York City visiting the American Ballet Theatre and Metropolitan Museum of Art, the first lady said, "the arts are not just a nice thing to have."

She also provided encouragement for arts education, saying, "my husband and I believe strongly that arts education is essential for building innovative thinkers who will be our nation’s leaders of tomorrow."

"It was a screenplay I wrote for a short film called Johnny Goner. I developed the idea during the high school program and then turned it into a screenplay the following year. It's the story of a hypochondriac who works at a funeral home," said Jennifer.

Watch the trailer at www.johnnygonerthemovie.com.

Jennifer studied playwriting and screenwriting with the Rita and Burton Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing at Tisch, where she is now an undergraduate student.

The Tisch Summer High School Program offers four weeks of professional training in acting, dramatic writing, filmmaking, and photography. Programs are offered in New York City, Dublin, and Paris.

Tisch Summer Students Hit the Ground Running

Students from our Fundamentals of Sight and Sound summer course waste no time in getting their feet wet, as you see below in a picture from Wednesday, May 20, 2009. Just three days into the 6-week course, the students have teamed up into crews of four, and are out shooting in the streets and parks of the city, taking full advantage of the gorgeous weather we've had here recently.

You can see more great photos over here.

Photo of the Day

WestVillage.jpg

Here at Tisch School of the Arts, the Village is our campus, and, for me, nothing typifies this history-rich neighborhood more than the beautiful, zig-zagging cobblestone streets framed by awe-inspiring pre-war brick townhouses that spill into the Hudson River.

But this scene is just one of many that inspire us. This summer, why not take a class or two with us and discover what fuels your creative side. There's still time to enroll in Summer Session II.

Open Arts Instructor Aly Rose Featured in Chinese Dance Magazine

AlyRoseArticleImage.jpg

Open Arts Instructor Aly Rose was recently featured in Chinese Dance Magazine. Here's a brief translated synopsis courtesy of Aly, and link to the complete article in Chinese:

After almost 12 years of dancing and choreographing in China, Luo Hong Mei (Aly Rose) suddenly was nowhere to be found. Having graced the programs of CCTV, the stages of the Poly Plaza & the Great Hall of the People, even setting up a studio in Beijing's art district 798, we wondered where did she go?

We discovered she migrated westward in 2007 to the unfamiliar world of American education, to Tisch School of the Arts no less. Although she is no longer here, she certainly did not leave China behind. We think she carried it with her as NYU now offers the History of Stage Performance after the Founding of the PRC and Steps, Rhythm, and Movement of Chinese Dance.

Dance Magazine's Karen Chen interviewed Rose about her new life in New York and teaching at NYU. Chen spent over one month evaluating her courses, visiting with her students, and sitting in on rehearsals of her most recent mass aerial work, "One," set to open the Walkway Over the Hudson for New York State's Quadricentennial Celebrations.

Aly teaches History of Performance and Dance in China, and Steps, Rhythm, and Movement of Chinese Dance in the Open Arts Curriculum.

Patricia Beaman, who teaches History of Dance in the Tisch Open Arts Curriculum, was featured today in The New York Times. On Tuesday evening, Patricia danced with Sinfonia New York at the New York Society for Ethical Culture in a concert dedicated to the Chaconne, a centuries-old musical form favored by J.S. Bach.

The Times reported that "a line of concertgoers who had not thought to make advance reservations for the free performance stretched down West 64th Street."
