The Office of Disability Services (ODS) at The School of Visual Arts (SVA) is looking for a Classroom Assistant to work with a student with Asperger’s Syndrome. The student has been attending SVA for 3 years, and is working toward a Bachelor’s degree in Illustration. His disability manifests through difficulty in communication, social skills, and academics. While his academic standing has remained intact thus far, he has started to encounter difficulty focusing in class and will benefit from periodic redirection and structure. Below is a detailed description of the role a Classroom Assistant would play, along with the support the ODS will provide during this appointment. </p>

<p>In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act of 2008 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation act of 1973, The Classroom Assistant position will be limited to activities that promote equal access to this student. This position will not entail any responsibilities akin to being a personal aid. Therefore, the main goal of this position is to foster appropriate classroom behavior, assist in maintaining focus, and provide cues to the student to stay engaged.</p>

<p><strong>Responsibilities</strong><br />
1. Establish rapport with the student. It will be important to meet prior to attending class to establish a relationship and discuss in detail what the Classroom Assistant will be doing with the student in class each week.<br />
2. Establish guidelines for in-class conduct. This student has struggled to remain consistent in his behavior in class. He tends to arrive late, listen to music loudly on his headphones, disrupt the class with inappropriate questions or comments, and move uncontrollably. However, with established rules and reminders during class, he will be able to focus on his work.<br />
3. Develop a cue system. During the first meeting, establish a way of reminding the student about appropriate behavior (e.g., using note cards to jot down questions to be saved for appropriate times). Also, prompting him to reengage with the task at hand is an important part of this position.<br />
4. Maintain communication with student’s parents and the ODS. This appointment will be funded by the student’s parents, and therefore the Classroom Assistant will be providing reports of progress and feedback to the student’s parents and the ODS. ODS will be involved as well to offer advice and support regarding behavior issues and Asperger’s Syndrome.</p>

<p>5. Before and after class meetings. In order to process what happened in each class, these meetings will be held weekly and will give the student a chance to work on improving classroom behavior. It is essential that all rules and boundaries be reviewed at least 5 minutes before the class, and a discussion to ensue after the class on what actually occurred.</p>

<p><strong>The student is currently enrolled in 3 classes:</strong><br />
Monday, 9:00am to 12:00pm<br />
Wednesday, 3:00pm to 6:00pm<br />
Thursday, 9:00am to 12:00pm.</p>

<p>Availability during all the above times is required; however, if this is impossible, at least two of the classes must be staffed with a Classroom Assistant. ODS will also schedule a one hour weekly appointment with the Classroom Assistant to provide support and feedback, during the course of the semester. Classes will be held until Monday, April 30, 2012.</p>

<p><strong>Qualifications</strong><br />
The ideal candidate for this position will be a master’s level student in School Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling, Applied Psychology, Social Work, or a related field. Previous experience working with individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome is preferred, but not a requirement. The candidate must be patient, yet assertive and must communicate effectively in writing and in person.</p>

<p><strong>Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following</strong>: <br />
- Help individuals meet their personal care needs including assistance with preparing breakfast, showering, dressing appropriately, and cleaning.<br />
- Support individuals to take prescribed medicine, complying with all medication administration policies and procedures, including storage, administration and record keeping.<br />
- Enable individuals to achieve independence in all areas of their life by providing appropriate information, opportunity, training, counseling and support.</p>

<p><strong>Additional Qualifications</strong>: <br />
High school diploma or GED. Prior experience a plus, but not essential. We are seeking candidates who enjoy active, “people-oriented” work and are sensitive to the needs and preferences of people with disabilities. AMAP-certified a plus but not a requirement. However, must be willing to take AMAP course.</p>

<p>Two young women with developmental disabilities are seeking a compatible live-in companion who will share their spacious three-bedroom apartment in Hamilton Heights and help them create a comfortable home and satisfying home life. They are seeking a warm and outgoing person who enjoys an active lifestyle. The roommate must ensure that the women are safe and healthy, and also create the feeling of a real home, where three women are sharing their lives.</p>

<p>The women require assistance with shopping, cooking, household tasks, and other daily activities, including help in the morning, as they get ready for the day. Another important aspect of the roommate’s responsibilities is to help the women become involved with people and activities in the local community.</p>

<p>The position requires 35 hours per week of work, including evenings and early mornings. Hours are flexible. </p>

<p>The roommate must sleep in at least five nights per week, but is encouraged to make the apartment her home and has full access to the premises at all times.</p>

The Medicaid Service Coordinator facilitates a person-centered approach for support, advocacy, and access to community, employment, medical and personal resources for individuals with a range of developmental disabilities by working with individuals and their families.  </p>

<p><strong>Responsibilities include</strong>:<br />
•	Developing, implementing, maintaining and reviewing the person’s ISP (Individualized Service Plan) every six months, or as needed.<br />
•	Coordinating appointments and meetings with service providers to develop the ISP and monitoring progression of person’s valued outcomes.<br />
•	Making referrals based on the person’s needs.<br />
•	Providing information on services and supports available to the individual and his/her family.<br />
•	Scheduling meetings with the individual at least three times a year including one home visit, or as needed.<br />
•	Arranging for clinical and other assessments and updating as needed.<br />
•	Accompanying the individual to new programs or services and assisting in the placement process.<br />
•	Documenting the monthly visits and other contacts with service providers.<br />
•	Maintaining and updating all files and records regularly<br />
•	Advocate for the rights of participants while ensuring all health, welfare and safety needs are met</p>

<p><strong>Qualifications</strong>:  <br />
Educational: An associate’s degree in a health or human services field from an accredited college or university or a degree in nursing as a Registered Nurse or an associate‘s degree or a bachelor‘s degree who has a minimum of 60 credits toward a bachelor‘s degree in a field other than health or human services may meet this educational requirement if a minimum of 20 of his/her college credits are in health and human services.  <br />
Experiential: One year experience working with people with developmental disabilities or  One year experience as a service coordinator/case manager with any population. The minimum experiential level does not have to be met if the person has a master‘s degree in a health or human services field.</p>

<p><strong>Salary</strong>:  Low to mid 30’s, depending upon degree and experience.  Excellent benefits, including tuition reimbursement after nine months.</p>

They are seeking a warm and outgoing person who enjoys an active lifestyle. The roommate must ensure that the men are safe and healthy, and also create the feeling of a real home, where three people are sharing their lives.    </p>

<p>The men require assistance with household tasks such as laundry, shopping, meal preparation, budgeting, and other daily activities, including help in the morning as they get ready for the day. Another important aspect of the roommate’s responsibilities is to help the men become involved in community activities and help develop friendships with neighbors and community members.</p>

<p>The live-in companion/support specialist will also be required to complete administrative responsibilities and maintain positive relationships and frequent communication with families and other service providers, and will assist the program director with administrative duties and planning for other program participants.  </p>

<p>The position requires 35 hours per week of work, including evenings and early mornings.  Hours are flexible.  </p>

<p><strong>Salary</strong>: $28,000/year plus health insurance; paid sick/vacation; tuition reimbursement after nine months; and other benefits<br />

•	Should be organized, self-motivated, and committed to working in a diverse environment<br />
•	Must be a team player and able to work effectively with a large variety of personalities and abilities<br />
•	Must be familiar with and believe in a harm reduction philosophy, experience working with drug users a plus<br />
•	MSW preferred or equivalent experience<br />
•	Ability to coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously in a chaotic environment<br />

·	Facilitates crisis intervention in the event of an emergency.<br />
·	Staffs Emergency Pager on a rotating basis.<br />
·	Maintains client charts and submits necessary notes and reports, including incident reports, in compliance with agency procedures.<br />
·	Oversees maintenance of apartments, inventories furniture, and alerts program director of maintenance problems.<br />
·	Attends in-service training as requested by supervisory personnel.<br />
·	Provides coverage as needed for other staff on the program team.<br />
·	Serves as “Qualified Mental Health Staff Person”<br />
·	Duties as assigned by supervisor.<br />
