Hey UHall!
In honor of Asian/Pacific/American Heritage Month (May nationally, but March in collegeland), I’d like to direct you to a few sites of interest, the first of which is NYU’s own directory of events related to the celebration of Asian/Pacific/American Heritage as well as to the discussion of particular issues still plaguing the APA community: http://www.nyu.edu/clubs/asian.heritage/calendar.html.
I’d also like to point out a few of my favorite blogs, Angry Asian Man and Disgrasian, both run by feisty, intelligent Asian-American men and women. The sites document A/P/A events of note in popular culture, politics, and other news. While Angry Asian Man is almost entirely politically and culturally-oriented, Disgrasian sometimes veers into Perez Hilton territory – all you PH fans will not be disappointed!
Finally, I’d like to invite any interested A/P/A students to New York City’s second annual A/P/A student conference, to be held this coming Saturday, April 18th. The event is absolutely free! It’s also going to be held right on our turf, at the Kimmel Center. Register here. Notable speakers include the women of Disgrasian (the blog mentioned above), Ramey Ko (founder of Asian Americans for Obama and lawyer involved in the recent controversy surrounding Texas Representative Betty Brown’s perhaps unintentional, but still culturally insensitive, remarks), and NYU Department of Residential Education’s very own Daniel Choi (Gramercy Green CDE) and Tera Nakata (Lafayette A/CDE). As you’ve probably guessed, I absolutely cannot wait. Props to my girl Bianca Lo for making me aware of this event!
I leave you with Grey’s Anatomy’s resident Korean-American badass Sandra Oh, who proudly proclaims that Asian-Americans rock every month, but especially this one. ;) Enjoy!
Cheers, Shendi
P.S. I’m here if you ever want to talk Asian/Pacific/American Studies, civil rights, popular culture, etc. – just shoot me an email at sx221@nyu.edu. I also recommend checking out the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis’s Asian/Pacific/American course offerings. Go forth, educate yourselves, create dialogue, and effect change!
