Norbert Hornstein (Maryland) will be giving a colloquium on Friday, Nov 6 titled "Speculations on a Minimalist Approach to Pronoun Binding". All colloquia take place in the first floor classroom of 10 Washington Place at 4:00pm.
Abstract:
This talk aims to see whether binding binding, or some parts thereof, obey movement constraints. I am interested in pronoun binding in particular. It begins with a magisterial survey of the possible minimalist options and advances the thesis that principle B effects are the residues of A'-binding. It suggests that there exists cases of binding outside sentence grammar and that binding tout court is subject to islands AND induces obviation effects of a special sort.
