Kimmel Hot Water & Heat Shutdown
November 20, 2009

A shutdown of the domestic hot water and heat in the Kimmel Center is scheduled for Saturday, November 21, 2009 starting at 11PM through Sunday, November 22, 2009 at 11AM.

This shutdown is required to disconnect the High Temperature Hot Water lines on the north west corner of the building, and reroute them for the 58 WSS site.

Excavation and Foundation Work
November 12, 2009

Excavation, foundation, and high temperature hot water work is scheduled to start at 58 Washington Square South the week of November 16, 2009. Work will include mobilization, followed by the start of excavation/foundation work and HTHW work.

Sidewalks will be closed along the perimeter of the site on Washington Square South, Thompson Street, and West 3rd Street. This will close a lane of traffic on WSS and one lane of parking on both Thompson Street and West 3rd Street to reroute pedestrian traffic around the construction zone.

This phase of the project is scheduled to take approximately six (6) months.

Pre-construction Meeting Notes
September 29, 2009

On Wednesday, September 23, 2009 there was a pre-construction meeting with the community regarding the 58 Washington Square South project.

As discussed, the mobilization of the site has begun. The scope of work includes the installation of the construction fence along the perimeter, a protective pedestrian walkway, the installation of a sidewalk bridge on WSS that will have the construction office on top of it and another sidewalk bridge along a small part of West 3rd street.

There will be a loss of parking along the west side of Thompson Street and the North side of West 3rd Street during this project. Excavation and work on the foundation will begin over the next few weeks and continue through Spring 2010. Once this scope of work is completed, work will begin on the construction of the building. The project is expected to be completed in Spring 2012.

Some of the concerns that were brought to the University's attention included:

  1. Vibrations - There will be vibration monitoring of the site and the University will take every precaution necessary to ensure not only the safety of our site, but the surrounding community as well.
  2. Dust Mitigation - The site will be misted before and during work to mitigate dust.
  3. Rodent Mitigation - Traps will be set and we will monitor the situation throughout the project.

Prior to construction, NYU's Office of Government and Community Affairs would like to invite you to an information session with the Project Manager.
