its true, supermarkets will cull anything after the (arbitrary) sell-by date passes. Those garbage dumpsters could feed your local homeless -- no problem!

By the way, anyone have advice on how to find thrown out computers?

Yes I mean I totally get it, if they dont throw it out the the staff will just give it for free to everyone and will be use to never buying it. But making sure that noone can eat it just seems needlessly cruel, maybe they can give them all to soup kitchens, as people that go there generally would not have bought the sandwhich from starbucks anyways.

There has to be a better solution than trash. I realize they want to maximize profits and people might refrain from buying if they knew they could get it free shortly, but somehow there has to be a win-win situation. I hope people get thinking about this and figure it out.

Personally, I would never dumpster dive. BUT I do think the wastefulness has gone crazy. i was at starbucks late and they started gathering up all the sandwhices to toss, and I said well hey I could take them all to some homeless people. They said they werent allowed to even take them themselevs, they had to toss them out and lock the dumpster so that the homeless wouldnt try to take them. Well that was pretty ridiculous, I am sure its all legal stuff but still, we should use common sense.

Im Freegan and im Proud of it! I go to many shops bins and I have found Tesco to be the most wasteful. Over about 2 years I must have taken about £7000 worth of food from thier bins - and I have NEVER got sick. Lets see more people become freegans and stop throwing thier money away on food when they can just forget the taboo of it and go through the bins!!!!!

I'm pretty sure dumpster diving is popular in europe (i know it is very common in London specifically...) I could be wrong, but I bet a lot of people do it all over the world because it is a great way to not only get good food for free, but help the environment and cheat the system too :P also, some places like india, china, and eastern europe might have more hungry people there, so i bet a lot of people dumpster dive.
