Exhibit Ideas

I was going to send this as an email to Robin, but in light of our workshop this week, I thought I'd post it here and hopefully generate some discussion about ideas and goals for the exhibit.
Jackie and I are going to be interviewing Pat Flynn, the band leader for the DSNY Pipe and Drum Band. He has been very cooperative and eager to participate, and so I ventured to ask him if the Pipe and Drum Band would not only attend the exhibit but perhaps play! He loved that idea and told me to ask Robin to contact Vito Turso, the Deputy Commissioner in charge of public affairs to get clearance.

For those interested here is the link the the band's website:

So, first, I'd love to hear from Robin about wether this would be possible or not.

Secondly, in light of Mierle Ukeles' presentation I've been thinking about other things we can do for our exhibit. I would love to see some objects such as recyclables, mongo, and trash bins. These objects are beautiful visual objects that represent not only the work of the department but also the debates and history of sanitation disposal in the city. Perhaps we could have a class mongo trip before the exhibit?

Please respond with any thoughts and ideas you've had for our exhibit.

Sandra Rozental:

Hi,

Having the band sounds great! Hope we can arrange it.

As far as the exhibition, I think we should consider two things:
1) what would be respectful and make the folks at DSNY feel proud of the exhibit

2)more broadly about the politics of representation. What are we showing about sanitation by including mongo? Should we have different policies for the in-house show and the street version (Kimmel)? What are some of the stereotypes about sanitation do we want to make sure we don't replicate?
Looking forward to discussing these later!
S.
