So I'm not sure how to categorize this, but Robin suggested I post it. I met one of the san-men on the way to class last week! His name was Gene and he was working on Broadway near 8th Street, and he was on truck number CN549-M2. (I'm still trying to figure out how to read them, and he probably thought it was funny that I'd be so interested in his truck number.) He was really nice -- had heard some about our project but not a lot, and he wanted to know more. He's the first sanitation worker I had talked to (the Emerald Society meeting was the next day), so it was exciting to meet someone and talk to him on the job.

Good for you for saying hi to him, Elaine. Did he tell you what district he's out of? Did you notice M2 on the truck? That means he was from the Manhattan 2 garage, on the West Side Highway just south of 14th Street. M2 picks up thte NYU neighborhood. Did you ask him how much time he has? That is, how long he's been on the job? Since you were coming to class at the end of the afternoon, I'll guess that he was on baskets, which means he's a junior guy. It probably also means that he still bounces. Or, if he was on a 4 to 12 collection route, he's not so junior and he just likes working nights (he gets a little bit of a pay bump for it). I'll explain these terms in the glossary that I'll upload to the blog shortly.
