Icebreaker.
Greetings Readers!
I don’t know if any of you are bloggers out there--but I cannot tell you how anxiety-provoking this first entry has been! Oh the pressure--to be witty and eloquent, humorous and thought provoking--I must have restarted 5 times already.
I have decided to go with a brief synopsis of my (relatively short) life. Think of it as a biopsychosocial history of me (please keep diagnoses to yourself) and enjoy…
I grew up in the Northwest Hills of CT. I try to hide this from people, because most people who live in New York hear Connecticut and think of argyle sweaters and yachts. Okay, I own a lot of argyle--but my town is actually a tiny, industrial town tucked in the corner of CT. It isn’t glamorous or sophisticated, but it is my home. While I am nostalgic for it now, four years ago I belted out Sinatra’s New York, New York while speeding up route 84 and away from my “little town blues”.
And, of course, I did make a “brand new start of it” at New York University. I graduated in May with a Bachelors Degree in Social Work from New York University. I can’t even begin to describe how incredible my undergrad experience was at NYU…but I will say this, the last three years were some of the most formative in my life, and I learned more about myself through the social work program here than I could have learned anywhere else. [Side Note: I was involved in a lot as an undergraduate, so if you have questions about campus activities, I can definitely be of help. From Project HEALTH and Student Government to Alternative Breaks and Work Study--I’m your girl.]
And now here I am. Twenty-one years old in the Advanced Standing MSW program at New York University. I am sure many adventures will ensue, as they always do. I am a student in the Integrative Geriatric Mental Health Policy Program here at the SSSW and will be doing my field placement at a senior housing agency…working with mentally-ill, chemically-addicted, formally-homeless elderly. Get all that?
I am very interested in, and would love to speak to any of you about: Geriatric Mental Health, Public Health, Palliative Care, Social Epidemiology, Public Policy, and the Psychosocial Consequences of disease. I am also a Reynolds Scholar in Social Entrepreneurship…but I think I will save that info for another entry.
Well, all that said…I didn’t really summarize my life so much…but I hope that you will get to know me by my future entries. I look forward to the journey that we are embarking upon together.
Warmly,
Lisa
