Training and Business Liaison - The Door

Supervisor: Director of Training and Business Development

Overview: The EPOCH program is the start of a new period in a young person’s life marked by radical change and new developments. EPOCH is designed to help a young person assess, set and obtain their educational and career goals. The program specifically allows a young person to craft a personalized life plan defining the steps he/she will take to achieve those goals while developing the necessary skills for future life success and independence. The Training and Business Liaison is responsible for cultivating and nurturing relationships with employers, training programs, unions, and other industry groups to provide job, internship, and sector-specific training opportunities that align with EPOCH participants’ career interests, goals, and Individualized Life Plan. He/She will spend a significant portion of his/her time in the field meeting with employers, training providers, labor unions, and other industry groups to cultivate opportunities for EPOCH participants.

Responsibilities:
    • Cultivate and nurture through networking and field visits an up-to-date bank of employment, internship, volunteer and sector-specific training program options for young people from entry-level to professional career growth opportunities in various job sectors
    • Stay abreast of labor market data and trends, local hiring needs, and civil service/union hiring opportunities, as they relate to the career needs and interests of EPOCH participants.
    • Provide individual and group assistance to young people around career exploration, job/internship/training search activities, and work readiness skills such as interviewing, resumes, professional behavior, etc.
    • Work closely with Talent Search College Advisors to ensure that young people are receiving post-secondary placement assistance aligned with their career interests, goals, and ILP.
    • Develop and facilitate workshops and training sessions based on employer/training program needs to prepare young people for specific internal and external employment, internship, and training opportunities, including the Career Learning Opportunities
    • Work with intake staff, Life Coaches, and Career Advancement Coaches to recruit young people for specific internship, training, and employment opportunities
    • Conduct semi-annual surveys and focus groups with young people in Straight-to-Work, DOE GED, and Infused GED to ensure that our employment, internship, volunteer, and training program options reflect the needs, interests, and career goals of young people
    • Maintain and update weekly job boards for internal and external employment, internship, and training opportunities
    • Work as part of the placement team to develop and manage an employer advisory committee for purposes of providing feedback and guidance around our training and placement efforts
    • Work with Career Advancement Coaches to develop and facilitate weekly job club, twice annual job fairs, and other special career events
    • Provide ongoing feedback and progress reports to Career Advancement Coaches regarding young people’s activities, progress in achieving goals outlined in the ILP as well as other issues that the Career Advancement Coaches will need to address with the young person
    • Regularly update EPOCH team regarding feedback received from employers and training programs where young people have been placed to help inform the content and structure of training, placement, and supportive services
    • Conduct specialized workshops in the resource center and serve as a vocational resource for the resource center and other Door staff
    • Participate as a member of an interdisciplinary team to increase our services to youth and to continually make adjustments to provide the appropriate individualized program plans for each young person
    • Collect and maintain all EPOCH program documentation and case records pursuant to data management procedures and contractual obligations
    • Demonstrate understanding and practice of the principles of positive youth development
    • Facilitate orientation for new program participants as needed
    • Attend all relevant meetings, trainings, workshops and outside events
    • Collaborate with interdisciplinary staff in the development and facilitation of agency-wide programming and events
    • Handle any appropriate responsibilities and functions as assigned by supervisor and/or director within scope of practice

Qualifications and Requirements:
    • Master’s Degree preferred, Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Sociology, Education or related field and two years experience in youth development, preferably employment and career oriented programs required
    • Minimum of three years experience outreaching to, engaging, and working with prospective employers and educational/vocational training providers to provide opportunities for young adults
    • Minimum of three years experience in a social service setting working with a multi-cultural young adult population
    • Demonstrated knowledge of educational/vocational programs for youth, labor market trends and opportunities within the business sector for youth
    • Ability to create curriculum and facilitate workshops/trainings around specific employment, training, and internship opportunities
    • Ability to closely collaborate with colleagues and function as part of a team to promote successful outcomes for youth
    • Ability to model work readiness skills and appropriate work place behavior at all times
    • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
    • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
    • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment

Hours: 35 a week, late afternoon and evening hours

Salary: High 30’s to Low 40’s
