The Next Big Thing to Watching Sparks Fly

I got my spring 2008 edition of Aperture in the mail tonight.

I remember at the end of last semester a lot of us asked Fred the question, "What is next in photography? Where is photography going? What is up and coming, new and ahead of us? What do we do?" He kind of left us hanging on an edge. I opened the magazine tonight and found his newest article somewhat answering those questions (if he hadn't done so already) and hinting at more, touching on "postphotographic media" and exploration of the "posthuman self." The article is intriguing and the magazine will follow up with more of such articles by him in forthcoming issues. Definitely worth checking out.

Also, in the same edition immediately following Fred's article is terrific insight into Gregory Crewdson's most recent body of work, not only previewing a bit of his next show, but also seeing him discuss/track his influences, inspirations and sparks. It's quite interesting to see how other influential artists with very different and specific styles on the American vernacular (Eggleston, Lynch, Hopper, Sherman, Sultan, diCorcia, etc.) come together and play out in his own work (let alone to see simply the stunning power already present in his work). Fascinating stuff.
