May has come and gone, and with it, another 50-plus CCTOP students have graduated from programs all across Steinhardt. This year, Steinhardt’s ceremonies were held at the Beacon Theatre, and the University commencement was at Yankee Stadium. Graduation is my favorite day of the year, as I get to see the students who I met at community colleges all over the metropolitan area cross the stage and get their diplomas. This year was extra special; CCTOP had three representatives up on the stage as award recipients for their excellent academic work, leadership, and contributions to Steinhardt. Maha Husein was selected as the banner bearer for the department of Teaching and Learning. Maria Petrolekas won the Bernard Katz Award from the Department of Applied Psychology, awarded for helpfulness, congeniality and dedication to her program and peers. Kevin Torres, also of Teaching and Learning, was awarded The Pi Lambda Theta Rho Leadership Award, acknowledging and celebrating excellence in academic achievement and leadership. Each of these students represented themselves, their families, and the community colleges where they started with tremendous honor.

While these students were singled out for their achievements, a source of great pride for them, their families, and CCTOP, all of the students who have graduated from Steinhardt through CCTOP (over 1200 over the last 20 years!) are success stories. Some have been dramatic, as with Kian Khatibi who was wrongly imprisoned for 9 years before going back to school and graduating this spring; for most, it was less dramatic, but no less inspirational. I offer my sincere congratulations to each and every graduate again, and I hope that you’ll stay in touch with us to let us know about all of your future successes.

Bart

PS- Grads, send us your pics!

This gives the organizations immediate access to your monetary donation during this critical time. Donations via checks are also a helpful. Major organizations on the ground in Haiti such as UNICEF and the Red Cross have access to great stockpiles of supplies and at this time can use your monetary donations to purchase more and cover transportation costs. In-kind donations of goods and commodities are generally not being accepted by these organizations. Your donated dollars give them the power to purchase in bulk at extremely lower prices then the cost of in-kind donations that you might make. Monetary donations to larger organizations already on the ground in Haiti assure a speeder delivery of the emergency supplies since these groups have an infrastructure for receiving and distributing supplies and are better prepared to manage the challenges of moving supplies where needed in the harsh environment there.

DONATION APPEALS

Red Cross

http://www.redcross.org/

UNICEF

http://www.unicef.org/

Doctors Without Borders

http://doctorswithoutborders.org/

Partners in Health

http://www.pih.org/home.html

Clinton Bush Haiti Fund

http://clintonbushhaitifund.org/

Islamic Relief USA

www.IslamicReliefUSA.org

American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee

http://www.jdc.org/help-jdc/donate.aspx

American Jewish World Service

http://ajws.org/

Catholic Relief Services

http://crs.org/

Christian Relief Services

http://www.christianrelief.org/

Other Comprehensive sites:

http://www.cnn.com/impact

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34835478/ns/world_news-americas/

http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/01/13/haiti-disaster-relief-how-to-contribute/

#2: Connect with an NYU Student Club or Student Council to Help Plan and Host an Event

ORGANIZING MEETINGS

Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at 6:30pm

1st floor, Bronfman Center, 7 E. 10th Street

Please join the Bronfman Center community for an organizing meeting in response to the disaster in Haiti.
