Financial Aid Appeals Reminder and Update

Don’t forget, the Office of Financial Aid is taking appeals for spring scholarship money through Monday, Dec. 15.  You can appeal for additional award money through the form at https://www.nyu.edu/financial.aid/appeal-form-ru.html.

Also, for those looking ahead, here is an external scholarship opportunity that has just been released:

Point Foundation Offers Higher Education Scholarships for Gay and Lesbian Students

Point Foundation, a scholarship-granting organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students of merit, has announced the opening of its 2009 application season. Students who will be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs for the 2009-10 school year are eligible to apply for the multi-year scholarships.

The scholarship program's selection criteria include academic excellence, leadership skills, community involvement, and financial need. Particular attention is paid to students who have lost the financial and social support of their families and/or communities as a result of revealing their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

On average, a Point Scholarship awards $13,200 in direct financial support, in addition to programmatic support in leadership training and mentoring. The average amount of annual support devoted to each scholar is between $26,000 and $31,000. Point Scholars agree to maintain a high level of academic performance and to give back to the LGBT community through the completion of an individual community service project each year. In addition, scholars are matched with mentors from the professional world who lend their expertise and career guidance and serve as role models for scholars.

For further information and application guidelines, visit the foundation's Web site.

Steinhardt: Passionately Pink for the Cure

Dear Friends,

On February 12, 2009, members of the NYU Steinhardt community will be going Passionately Pink for the Cure® to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer.

It’s passionate, because the need to end breast cancer is so urgent. It’s pink, because that’s the color we’ll wear to accomplish our goal.

Participating is simple. Just wear an article of pink clothing or a pink ribbon on February 12, 2009 and make a donation of $5 or more to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the leader of the global breast cancer movement.

If you’d like to contribute online, please use the link below. In return for your contribution, you’ll get a pink ribbon pin and the satisfaction of helping to move us closer to a world free of breast cancer.

Please contact Karen King (Karen.d.king@nyu.edu) if you have any questions or would like to be involved in planning our event. Thanks in advance for your help and for showing your true colors by going Passionately Pink for the Cure on February 12, 2009. If you have stories to share on our page’s blog or pictures to share of your work to fight against breast cancer and you would like to share, please forward to Karen King (for pictures, please be sure you have permissions to use the pictures).
