NYU Week of Service

glwdlogo.gif

Last week was NYU's annual week of service! Events were available all week in which students from all different schools and standings had the opportunity to volunteer at a wide range of community organizations around the city.

I was the student leader for a group going to God's Love We Deliver Friday afternoon. We were a but nervous about walking around, delivering food, in the balm 90 degree heat however the day was entirely enjoyable. Once we arrive at God's Love We Deliver down on Spring Street and 6th Ave. we became absorbed in our excitement to learn more about the organization’s services, client relationship and yummy food. For those of you who are unfamiliar with GLWD, it is an organization that began about 25 years ago. They deliver 3 hot meals a day (1,600 calories at least) to those in NYC afflicted with serious illnesses. It began with serving AIDs/HIV patients and has recently expanded to include diseases such as Cancer, MS, etc. Their mission is to provide people with the proper nutrition they need in order to fight their illness. What I find so remarkable about GLWD is that there is NO restriction on who can receive meals other than being diagnosed with some serious illness. No matter how much money you have or do not have, GLWD is there to take care of you and from what I saw last Friday, they do a fantastic job of it.

When our group split up to do our various tasks, I took three students up to the Gay + Lesbian Center on E 13th street to start making deliveries. We were able to reach about 5 apartments and although it may seem like a small number of delivers we felt really helpful (that's not a clique when you really are helping someone improve their health). No matter what, when we were finished there were 5 clients who had healthful food for that day. It may sound silly, but you know how you feel so warm and cared for when your mom loves you and brings you food when you're sick? Well, when we were delivering food I just felt like maybe we were giving that feeling to someone else. It was a very special day. Our Health + Wellness group in Scholars has actually adopted GLWD as our community service organization so look for more from that in the future

PS. If you are interesting in volunteering for GLWD please visit their website. They are ALWAYS looking for help. They rely on volunteers to make local deliveries and there are a lot of people to reach so please contact when if you're interested.

Interview...

The coolest thing ever has just happened! I was interviewed by Cupcakes Take The Cake about my love affair with the tiny dessert. Check it out!

Sweet Saturday Sunshine

Yesterday was one of those perfect days in which nothing spectacular occurs and yet the pristine normality of it strikes a note of, well, perfection. It was a simple Saturday sans any frills or big events but it was so picturesque that I have to share.

Saturday morning, after sleeping in for the first time in weeks (midterms) I dressed and prepared myself for this month's Cupcake Meetup down in Tribeca. A somewhat smaller group than our last excursion to Baked in Brooklyn met at Tribeca Treats on Reade St. and Church St. for an afternoon nibble. It was a brilliant day. The wind was cool, the sun vibrant, everyone seemed to be out enjoying the weekend.

Tribeca Treats was a perfect accompaniment to the fantastic NY fall weather. The space was simple and elegant in a way in which modern minimalism met real home comfort. The group of us sat around a large wooden table sampling goodies, catching up and greeting new faces. I was seated next to a lovely woman Denise who was as sunny as the Saturday afternoon shining outside! One thing that I truly love about our meetups is that it provides an opportunity to met extraordinary New Yorkers you may never have the chance to get to know otherwise. When I left the meetup later that afternoon I felt like I had met someone wonderful, a friend, who was an inspiration and a pleasure to learn about.

But wait! The most important part...the treats. Indeed, Tribeca Treats proved itself as a downtown dessert debutant boasting a wonderful selection of cupcakes, cookies and dainty chocolate. I sampled a s'mores cupcake with dark chocolate cake, marshmallow frosting and crumbled graham crackers on top. The combination was delightful although my frosting was a little difficult to manage. Of course, as cupcake connoisseurs we can't just eat one...you buy in bulk, split and sample tiny pieces of each flavor. There was a pumpkin spice cake with cinnamon buttercream that was quite tasty (and completely appropriate for the season), a red velvet that was well crafted (although I have yet to find a favorite red velvet cupcake in NYC) and finally a plain vanilla cupcake that was a fine snack as well. Over all, Tribeca Treats was everything I had hoped it would be: tasty, tiny and enormously cute. If you're down in Tribeca stop in for a bite! There are delicious cookies (try the snickerdoodles), homemade ice cream sandwiches and beautifully crafted chocolates you can box up for someone special! (And if you don’t have someone special, no worries, I'm always willing and able to eat chocolate so you can just send some my way)

Instead of taking the subway from City Hall back up to Union Square, I decided to savor the day and walk home through Soho. My goodness! I think everyone and their grand-nannies shared that very same thought. Soho was a mad house. The sidewalks were crowded, shops were overflowing with customers, street vender's calls blended in with the roar of fluttering chitchat filling the air.

On my way uptown I ran into a few interesting sites. First, a Sergio Furnari exhibit caught my eye. It was right on the corner of W. Broadway and I believe it was Spring St. The giant sculpture featured an image reminiscent of that famous photograph of the construction workers eating their lunch on the beam of a soon-to-be skyscraper in NYC. It was attached to a pickup truck but it was really beautiful. When I looked up Sergio later, his website shows an array of sculptures that he's worked on. I'd never heard of him prior to this but his things are fantastic. Check it out.

Thankfully, Sergio's sculpture led me to Le Petite Cafe. Le Petite Cafe is a French bistro I've always meant to try but have never found time to visit. Unfortunately, having cupcakes for lunch left me a bit full and I only had room for a cappuccino to go, however it was delicious and I can't wait to go back and try something a bit more substantial. Has anyone ever eaten there before? I'm curious to see what you think.

Even closer to Union Square I stumbled upon the "Bella Muse" booth on the side of the street. "Bella Muse" has a collection of greeting cards, shirts and infant attire all delicately printed with amusing images and wordplay. There was an infant t-shirt that had a princess on it with the phrase "I drink like a man" daintily scripted below. If I knew the sex of any of the babies being born into my life in the next few months, I would have picked it up. Something tells me though that a little Irish baby boy wouldn't be too pleased if he had a drunken princess on his shirt. Actually...maybe he would. Who knows? Anyway, Bella Muse has a fabulous website with images for all different occasions. Try a "Saucy, saucy little tart" card for a good friend, a "Crusts off to you!" note for your mother, or even a "Shoe Whore" t-shirt for someone special. Bella Muse items are actually sold at Tribeca Treats and a bunch of different store locations around the city. Check out their website for specific locations or order online if you are so inclined!

I wrapped up my Saturday afternoon with a trip to Washington Square Park to fulfill my role as a typical NYU student. I finished up some reading at the fountain late in the afternoon, listened to the performers and finally wandered through the street fair back up to Union Square.

As I said, nothing out of the ordinary...but a truly perfect day nonetheless. One forgets sometimes how easy it is to find "simple pleasures" in the midst of such a hectic city. It's lazy weekends such as this that remind me why I love living here so very much. More soothing and beautiful days to come...Enjoy!

NYU Paris Begins

hdr.logo.gif

I've been putting off this entry simply because there is so much to tell and I'm not quite sure how to share it all at once without sounding like a scattered and crazed individual. I'll start by saying that after months of anticipation, I have been notified that I will be studying abroad in Paris next semester. Vive La France!

Basically, I turned in my application eight months early thinking it was still rolling admissions. Nonetheless, I will be moving to Paris in the beginning of January and could not be more thrilled about it.

At the moment, I am working on collecting materials for my student visa and trying to book a flight (issues). For those who might be interested in learning more about the study abroad program here at NYU, I will certainly keep you posted about the process I am going through in the coming weeks and months.

Pour les autres personnes qui etudieront a Paris ce primtemp, Je suis excité pour vous rencontrer!

More to come...enjoy.
Au revoir!

Premature Evacuation

FCO_BEU_Body_Banana150.jpg

I am such a baby. In an effort to attend more NYU events for the sake of the blog, I made a point of going to the "Sextravaganza" program at Carlyle last night. It figured it would be easy. It was right at the bottom of my building, the poster said there would be snacks, how bad could it possibly be?

For any normal person the answer would be not bad at all. As I entered the C2 study lounge there were many smiling faces passing around a gigantic blow up penis, the table looked like a rainbow covered with a spectra of different colorful sex toys, there were even three penis cakes all frosted a different flavor to suit everyone's taste. For me however, I felt like I was having a panic attack. I don't know why but I completely chickened out! I'm a junior in college who feels uneasy about cutting into a German chocolate penis cake, go figure!

But sadly, yes I was a huge baby and stayed only for about 10 minutes. I felt uncomfortable and the table of sex gadgets (most of which looked a painful) was just staring at me in inappropriate ways. I was so bashful I could barely lift my gaze! Every time you did yours eyes would catch some awkward sight and the feeling of "Oh my god, do they think I'm staring at that" hastily rolls in.

The positive outcomes of the experiences? Well for one thing, everyone who was there was actually quite friendly, so that was nice. The study lounge looked beautiful all decorated with balloons. The chocolate covered strawberries were delicious and I got a goody bag!

I know from the past that the "Sexstravaganza" event is one of the most popular nights with most students. I can honestly say, from what I experienced it definitely seemed like an entertaining and informative program. I wish I had stayed longer so that I could give you more detail on the agenda for the evening. Sadly, as soon as the "seminar" aspect began and the condom-covered bananas were whipped out, I headed for the hills.

Once again, a memorable night at NYU. Enjoy!

Lucky Shops 2007

IMG_7554.JPG

Luck Shops 2007. Heaven on earth for the fashionistas of Manhattan. This annual event hosted by the iconic magazine "Lucky" is an absolute treat for the women and men who live, breath and sweat fashion.

IMG_7541.JPG

Now I am especially 'lucky' (ha) when it comes to this yearly bash because I have THE in of all time. My aunt, who could easily be mistaken for a model amongst the sea of shoppers, works in PR for Lucky and is kind enough to include me in the event. As a young person in New York City there are not many opportunities to skip the line and get the red carpet treatment so this truly is a treat.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Lucky Shops event, every year Lucky magazine creates a sample sale of sorts. Countless designers come together, slash their prices and indulge the label hungry populace of NYC. You can find anything from clothing, status bags, shoes and beauty products from designers such as Marc Jacobs, Catherine Malandrino and Cynthia Rowley just to name a few.

My favorite feature of Lucky Shops is the jean bar. Good lord! Designer jeans are sold at practically half price and they hem them for you right there! This year I proved my loyalty to J.Brand and picked up a fantastic pair of wide-leg trouser jeans that would make you melt! They're like butter. Basically you grab a bunch to try on, make your way into the impromptu "dressing tent" and get at it. There's such a pleasant sense of solidarity in the changing area. All of the women compliment each other's denim saying things like "Oh my god, you HAVE to buy those" and "Those jeans make your butt look amazing!" How could you not get them after an experience like that?

My mama combing through the Michael Kor rack

The atmosphere of Lucky Shops is absolutely insane and could probably provoke an anxious person into a complete panic attack. There is so much energy between the bargin hunters, house music and free starbucks samples. Male models roam the aisle with trays of snacks, which most people are too busy to eat. The eye candy is probably much tastier than the snacks anyway.

When you find your fashion booty at a particular tent, your pieces are placed in a bag and put aside for you. You're given a receipt so that you can purchase your items later on and continue shopping sans the heavy merchandise. You have to be strategic though, you only have an hour to bring your receipt to a register and claim your things. Time flies by when you're trying on vintage Prada.

IMG_7551.JPG

By the end of the afternoon I ended up with a pair of J.Brand trouser jeans, a dusty pink shirt from Theory and a Nicholas K jacket one woman described as "fierce". I couldn't be more pleased! (Although I did have to force myself to walk out of the door in fear I would blow my tuition on designer digs)

Thank you Aunty M. for yet another stylish day amongst the racks of such fine garments. What's better than christmas and the Barney's sample sale combined? Lucky Shops! 365 more days until my next urge to splurge

Enjoy!
