In Partibus Infidellum

In partibus infidellum, nihil novum sub sole.

De ñapa

Ñapa in Spanish means an unexpected benefit, especially a gift a customer receives with a purchase.  It comes from the Quechua word "yapa" which means "something added".

In English and French, they have a word "lagniappe" with the same meaning, which has its origin in the Spanish "la ñapa".  Lagniappe was today's word of the day in Wordsmith.

This is an example of a word that includes an article when it was converted to another language.

Palenquero

En Colombia, como en todo país, existen varias lenguas. En un pueblo en el que habitan descendientes de inmigrantes africanos se habla una lengua que es una mezcla del español y una lengua africana. Se le llama a este idioma palenquero. He aquí un enlace a un reportaje que fue publicado en el New York Times acerca de este idioma:

San Basilio de Palenque Journal: A Language, Not Quite Spanish, With African Echoes
By SIMON ROMERO
Palenquero, still spoken in the jungle of northern Colombia, may be the last remnant of a Spanish-based lingua franca once used widely by slaves throughout Latin America.
