CC's Corner - A CSD Student Blog

Hi everyone, and welcome to my first blog!

You wouldn't believe how many students declare Bobst (the magnificent library at NYU, for those of you that don't already know) their second home during midterm time! My friends and I were infuriated that other students dare to take our usual, cozy study areas in "the museum" during exam time, since they never study at Bobst any other time.

Despite the stressful atmosphere created by exam time, there is one plus: the relationships I build with my professors strengthen. I feel that developing individual relationships with professors is extremely helpful at NYU, given the University’s size. Professors are available, but it is up to the student to take advantage of their office hours, etc.

Now that midterm week is over, I'm free to relax a bit. There is still much work to be done - papers, readings, upcoming quizzes...ok, so maybe I'm not so free after all! This past weekend served as the lengthy study break I had been craving, though.

Halloween here is always crazy and fun! Everyone dresses up, the parade is packed, and the liveliness of NYC abounds! My friends and I decided to be Disney characters - cliché, but an excuse to get all “dolled up”. Everyone seemed to go all out this year; the amount of creativity, given the incessant rain, was remarkable.

This is one of the many reasons I love being a Steinhardt student at NYU. I am a Speech Pathology major and I plan to minor in American Sign Language. I encourage you to read future posts to truly appreciate a first-hand experience of campus life. I am happy to answer any questions or comments that you might have. Feedback is much appreciated!

Hello again! Thanks so much for staying tuned in to CC's Corner!

Some really terrible news you may have missed in the past week: On Tuesday, Nov. 3rd, a fellow NYU student is said to
have committed suicide. Word spread across campus and it was confirmed in the news.

His name was Andrew Williamson-Noble, and he was an undergraduate junior in the College of Arts and Science (http://cas.nyu.edu/page/ugHome).  Andrew
managed to jump from the 10th floor of Bobst library (http://library.nyu.edu/), referred
to as "the stacks", at 4:30am.  Many students who were diligently studying on the 2 lower levels early
that Tuesday morning were witnesses to this awful tragedy. I can't even begin to imagine the kind of psychological trauma this
would cause them.

I didn't know Andrew, but one of my suitemates did. She was shocked when I mentioned the news to her later that day. She had had
a class with him last year and had gotten the chance to speak to him on more than one occasion. She said he was a sweet and by
all appearances normal guy who seemed to embrace college life in

the same way that we do.

I think I speak for the entire NYU community when I say that I'd like to wish my sincerest condolences
to Andrew's family.
Everyone was affected by this tragedy in one form or another, even those who did not know him personally – he was our peer.  I
can’t help but wonder if we could have prevented this from happening.

Many of us have similar college experiences to Andrew's – consequently, we understand the build-up of pressure in terms of testing,
papers, and grades, in addition to the sense of loneliness we sometimes feel when procrastination gets the best of us.

NYU is stressing
the importance of the NYU Wellness Exchange (http://www.nyu.edu/999/) as
a resource, and rightly so. If a student is ever feeling unduly depressed or contemplating suicide, it is essential to
call this hot line. In my opinion, seeking this type of assistance is an excellent beginning.  Unfortunately, students in
this state of mind don’t usually think/desire to take this first step at tackling problems, but the resource is available,
so I strongly
encourage students to embrace it.  Life is worth living!

I hope that my next post will be more upbeat.  NYU as well as NYC really do provide students with a myriad of positive academic
and extracurricular opportunities that result in many amazing accomplishments and fulfilling memories to last a lifetime!

Hey everyone!

Just a quick note!

I am the co-vice president of NSSLHA (http://www.nsslha.org/nsslha/), which is essentially "Speech Club" at NYU. Today, the officers as well as some club members met at Palladium Hall aka "Pallades" (http://www.nyu.edu/residential.education/residence.halls/palladium.hall/) for brunch (http://www.campusdish.com/en-US/CSE/NYU/Locations/PalladiumFoodCourt.htm). It was a really nice way for club members to get to know each other better. I know the freshman were happy to attend so that they could meet new people and have burning questions regarding student life answered by the upperclassman. I actually met one of my best friends here at a NSSLHA event last year. I love being an active part of the club, and I can't wait to participate in future events.

Now...getting back to the topic of food, if you haven't been to Palladium brunch before, allow me to explain.

First of all, for those of you who don't already know, Palladium Hall is a residence hall with (in my opinion) one of the best dining halls on campus. The building also has a huge athletic facility, complete with a Weight Room, Cardio Room, Auxiliary Gym, Natatorium, Rockwall, and more (http://www.nyu.edu/palladiumathleticfacility/)! It's really nice to head downstairs, work up an appetite, and finish off a laid-back weeknight with a delicious wrap and fries.

Sunday brunch is a whole 'nother story!

There are bagels and cheesecakes a-plenty...they've got waffles and omelets galore! Muffins and home fries and bacon, oh my! Oh! And you can't forget the chocolate fountain!

I look forward to every Sunday Brunch at Palladium, and I highly recommend it!

Well, I just wanted to check in! I have tons of homework to do -- better get on that!

...Did I mention procrastination is my specialty?
