As you may know, this summer I'm a Steinhardt Orientation Leader. Well, today we finished our 2nd Freshmen Orientation BUT we also finished our 2nd Transfer Orientation on Tuesday. So after the Transfer Orientation some Orientation Leaders went out to dinner. After some minor drama of picking out a place and selecting yummy sounding foods off the menu, we thought we were all set for a delicious dinner. Well, myself and another OL never received our dinners. It was difficult to read the waitress and decide if ours was on our way just not ready at the same time or if it was never our meal she was going into the kitchen for. We eventually just canceled our orders that apparently were never entered anyway and left with the group.
After contemplating what we could get for dinner, we decided on sushi and then decided to go to Sushi Samba since we were right around the corner. That's the same restaurant I went to for my birthday dinner with my family that's SOOO GOOD!
Anyway, since it was such a gorgeous night out and neither of us had plans afterwards, we both decided to take a stroll through the West Village since we don't get over there too much. We ended up going over to the West Side Highway and walking along that which I had heard was gorgeous but hadn't been to. It was so nice just walking along the water--there were runners, picnickers (is that a new word?), and just people enjoying this quaint area of NYC. Being surrounded by water and grass was such a great little retreat from the typical NYC feel. I really want to go back and have a picnic with some friends one day...and maybe even for a run. But for now, I figured I would share my thoughts about my walk along the West Side Highway (aka West St. -- from Houston St. to 14th St.). Hope you can get out and enjoy it one day :)

i m also from a big city - Moscow, Russia and thinking to take TESOL post bach. program at NYU. I never been to New York but know some things about its culture and sports. Its also very cool to know that there are hiding places in a big apple like the one you described - smth i really like to find out in my home town. Maybe it sounds a bit stupid but do you know it there are places to play basketball around campus area?

You should definitely look into the TESOL program at NYU--I've heard great things about it as I worked with someone two years ago who was enrolled and had a positive experience.
And since you seem to be into basketball: we have two gyms on campus (Palladium on 14th St. and Coles on Mercer St.) which both have basketball courts. We have intramural basketball teams, too. There are also the West 4th St. courts if you're looking for public, city use.
Hope that helps. Good luck and enjoy New York!
