About Blogs at NYU
The NYU Blogs service offers members of the NYU community the ability to easily create and manage a blog.
In the past few years, blogs have emerged as a major category of Internet web publishing. Blogs enable an individual to create an evolving web site and, optionally, for other members of a community or group to comment on postings. It is our hope that the NYU Blogs service will create a sense of community among students and offer faculty an up-to-date, innovative way of engaging their students and colleagues in discussion.
What is a Blog?
Blog is short for weblog. A blog is a type of web page where content is frequently updated and displayed in chronological order with the most recent information listed first. The content and purpose of a blog varies greatly—from links and commentary about events or other web sites, to news about a person/idea, diaries, photos, poetry, mini-essays, project updates, even fiction.
The term “weblog” was coined by Jorn Barger on December 17, 1997 to describe the process of “logging the web” as he surfed. The short form, “blog”, was coined by Peter Merholz, who jokingly broke the word weblog into the phrase ‘we blog’ in the sidebar of his blog www.peterme.com in April or May of 1999. This was quickly adopted as both a noun and verb—the activity of updating a blog is “blogging” and someone who keeps a blog is a “blogger”.
What the best blogs tend to have in common is voice—your voice.
